Deputy to the Fuehrer and at one time Hitler's appointed successor after Hermann Goering
During the First World War he served in the same regiment with Hitler, and in 1923 he took part at the Beer-Hall Putsch. In 1932 Hitler made him Chairman of the Central Political Commission of the NSDAP. After Hitler became Chancellor, Hess was appointed Deputy Fuehrer and was also Reich Minister without Portfolio. In 1939 he was named successor to Hitler after Goering. In 1941, without having Hitler's permission, Hess flew to Scotland for unclear reasons. Hitler then pronounced him insane. In 1946 Hess was tried for war crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in Spandau prison on August 1987.
